Alverno splits in opening day of Luther Tournament

DECORAH, Iowa -- After a tough 3-0 loss to Simpson in the opening match of the Luther College Tournament, Alverno bounced back to defeat Knox 3-0 for an opening-day split.

The Inferno's victory snaps an 11-match skid, and marks the team's first victorious sweep of the season (25-15, 25-15 and 25-12).

Versus Knox (0-13 overall), Alverno (3-12) was able to spread the offensive attack round as four Inferno players issued at least five kills in the win. Shelby Metzger (Montreal, Mo./Camdenton) led the attack with eight kills, Maryah Arterberry (Brawley, Calif./Brawley Union) and Cali Trepp (Iron Mountain, Mich./Niagara) each added six and Linda Vang (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) added five.

Metzger also had a match-high 19 assists and nine service aces, which ties the Alverno single-match record from the service line.

Defensively Morgan Stuckey (Duncanville, Texas) led the Inferno with 22 digs and Reagan Owen (Salina, Kan./Central) added 21.

In the 25-11, 25-8, 25-15 loss to Simpson (3-9), the Inferno struggled with the attack as they committed 17 errors and connected for just 10 kills.

Stuckey and Erin Dulek (Rosholt, Wis.) each tallied three kills, while Metzger had 10 assists and Owen had a match-high 11 digs.

The Inferno continue play in the Luther Tournament tomorrow versus Waldorf at 10 a.m., and then take on host Luther at 2 p.m.
